Business License
Every business, new or existing, is required to file for a business license for doing business in city limits of Benton, KY. Business licenses are due on January 1 and expire December 31 of the same year. There is an application that must be completed and signed each time before a Business License can be processed. Payments and applications are now available online under the Online Services tab.
Contractors must submit a Certificate of Insurance for proof of worker's compensation and general liability before the Business License can be issued. Please contact 270-527-8677 with any questions.
Nuisances
Nuisance is any condition or use of premises or of building exteriors or property which is detrimental to the property of others or which causes or tends to cause a substantial diminution in the value of other property in the neighborhood in which the premises are located. This includes, but is not limited to, the keeping or depositing of or scattering over the premises of any of the following:
- Lumber, junk, trash or debris;
- Abandoned, discarded or unused objects or equipment such as automobiles, trucks, stoves, refrigerators, freezers, cans, paper cardboard or plastic containers;
- Any compost pile which is of a nature so as to spread or harbor disease, emit unpleasant or offensive odors or harmful gases or attract rodents, vermin or other pests, animals or insects;
- Unsanitary matter of any kind unless same is contained in containers or vessels that would prevent access to humans, animals, rodents, files, insects or other pests.
Discarded or inoperative vehicles are not to remain on property for a period in excess of ten days unless in an enclosed building or so located upon the premises as not to be readily visible from any public place or other surrounding property. This does not apply to any vehicle on the premises of a business enterprise operated in a lawful place according to the ordinance as written.
Unlawful Accumulations and Weeds
It shall be unlawful for any person in charge of property, whether by ownership, as tenant or other responsibility to the property in the City to permit or maintain on any such lot or land, or along the sidewalk, street or alley adjacent to the same between the property line and the curb or the middle of the alley or for ten (10 feet outside the property line if there be no curb, the collection of rubbish, trash, stagnate water, or any other growth of weeds, grass or other rank vegetation to a greater height than ten (10) inches, on the average, or any accumulation of dead weeds, grass or brush. It shall also be unlawful for any such person to cause, suffer or allow poison ivy, rag weed, or other poisonous plants, or plants detrimental to health to grow on any such lot or land in such manner that any part of such ivy, rag weed or other poisonous or harmful weed shall extend upon, or overhang or order any public place or allow seed, pollen or other poisonous particles or emanations therefrom to be carried through the air into or onto any public place.
